10 Questions to Ask a Custom Packaging Supplier Before You Order

10 questions to ask a custom packaging supplier: minimum order, design help, finishes, lead time and quality

Before you choose a custom packaging supplier, ask ten questions: what they make, their minimum order, how much design help you get, which finishes and materials they offer, how long production takes, how you approve the design, whether they offer sustainable options, how they check quality, and who you talk to when something goes wrong. A good packaging supplier answers all ten clearly and in writing.

Two suppliers can send you the same box photo and still deliver very different custom boxes. These questions help you tell them apart before you pay anything. Under each one we explain what a good answer sounds like, and how we answer it at The Innovative Packaging.

1. What types of custom packaging do you make?

Some suppliers only make one or two box styles. Others make almost anything. Ask to see the styles that fit your product, not a general catalog.

Check that they make the box you need. That could be mailer boxes, tuck end boxes, two-piece boxes, tray and sleeve boxes or boxes with a window. It also helps if they know your industry. CBD boxes, cosmetic boxes and food boxes each have their own rules and needs. You can browse every style we make under boxes by style, or start from your product under boxes by industry.

A good answer: they name the exact styles, show real examples, and tell you honestly when something is not their strength.

2. What is your minimum order quantity?

Minimum order quantity, or MOQ, is the smallest number of boxes a supplier will print in one run. Many factories set it at 500 or 1,000 boxes. For a new brand that means paying for boxes that sit in storage for months.

Our minimum is 100 units per style, and volume pricing starts at 500 units. A low minimum lets you test a product launch before you commit to a big run. Whoever you talk to, ask for a quote at two quantities so you can compare the price per box. Our custom box cost guide explains why the price per box drops as the quantity goes up.

A good answer: one clear number, and a clear price at each quantity.

3. Do you help with packaging design and artwork?

A design that looks fine on screen can still print badly if the file is wrong. Ask what design help is included and what costs extra.

Useful help includes the dieline for your box, a check of your artwork before printing, and print-ready files. We make the dieline for every custom order at no extra cost, our team reviews your artwork, and you get unlimited revisions on your proof. If the word is new to you, read what a dieline is and why it matters.

A good answer: a plain list of what is included, and no surprise design fee later.

4. Which printing and finishing options do you offer?

Ask which print methods and finishes they use, and ask to see them on a real box. The common options for custom printed boxes are:

  • Offset or digital printing
  • Foil stamping
  • Spot UV
  • Embossing and debossing
  • Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination

Each finish adds to the price, so ask for the cost of each one on its own line. Our guide to matte vs gloss lamination can help you pick, and our materials and printing page shows every option we offer.

A good answer: they explain what each finish looks like and what it adds to the price.

5. What materials do you use?

The material decides how the box feels and how well it protects your product. The usual choices are paperboard, corrugated board, kraft and rigid board.

Ask for the board thickness, not just the name. Two suppliers can both say "cardboard" and mean very different things. Then match the material to the product. A heavy item needs stronger board, like our corrugated cardboard boxes. A light item with a high price may need a thicker, more premium feel, which is why many gift boxes use rigid board.

A good answer: they ask what you are packing before they recommend a material.

6. How long does production take?

Your launch date depends on this answer. Ask for the production time, whether rush orders are possible, how long shipping takes, and how they tell you about delays.

With us, standard production takes 10-15 business days from proof approval, and rush production takes 8-10 business days for an extra fee. Shipping anywhere in the USA is free. You can read the details on our delivery info page. Tell us your deadline when you ask for a quote, and we will tell you straight away whether we can hit it.

A good answer: dates in writing, and a promise to warn you early if something slips.

7. How do I approve the design before you print?

Never pay for a full print run without seeing what it will look like. Ask how the approval step works and how long it takes.

At The Innovative Packaging you get a digital proof within 24 to 48 hours of placing your order, and nothing goes to print until you approve it. If you are comparing us with another supplier, ask them the same thing, and ask whether their proof costs extra or slows your order down.

A good answer: a clear approval step, and nothing printed without your sign-off.

8. Do you offer eco-friendly packaging?

More shoppers notice packaging waste, so this question matters. Be careful with big claims, though. Ask exactly which materials can be recycled and which cannot. Uncoated kraft and plain paper boxes usually can. Laminated boxes, foil and rigid board usually cannot.

There are rules here too. Under the FTC Green Guides, you should only call a box "recyclable" without any qualifier if recycling for it is available to at least 60 percent of the people or communities where it is sold. If your supplier says a box is recyclable, that claim ends up printed on your packaging, so it needs to hold up.

If this matters to your brand, look at our eco-friendly boxes and kraft paper bags. Be wary of any supplier who says every box is fully recyclable and cannot explain why.

A good answer: named materials, honest limits, and no vague green labels.

9. How do you check quality, and what if something goes wrong?

A mistake is expensive once 1,000 boxes are printed. Ask what checks happen before the order leaves the factory. Look for checks on the board, the color, the print and the finish.

Then ask what happens if the boxes arrive damaged or do not match the proof. If your boxes differ from the proof you approved, or arrive damaged, we reprint them or give you a refund. You just need to tell us within 24 hours of delivery. The full terms are on our refund policy page.

A good answer: named checks at each stage, and a written plan for fixing mistakes.

10. Who do I talk to, and how fast do they reply?

Printing has a lot of steps, so you will have questions. Test the supplier before you order. Send one question and see how long the reply takes, and whether it actually helps.

We reply to quote requests within 24 hours. You can also contact our team directly. Whoever you choose, ask how they handle changes, and who you contact if something goes wrong after you order.

A good answer: a fast, useful reply now. A supplier who is slow before you pay is rarely faster after.

How do you compare packaging suppliers side by side?

Ask every supplier the same ten questions, then put their answers next to each other. This table shows what a good answer looks like, and what should make you stop and ask more.

What else should you check before you order?

Ask about hidden costs. Some suppliers add die fees or plate fees after the quote. We do not charge die fees, plate fees or setup costs, so the price we quote is the price you pay. Our packaging FAQs cover payment, revisions and price matching.

If you sell in a regulated industry, ask about labeling rules too. Our guides on choosing CBD packaging and choosing custom cosmetic boxes go through what to look for.
