Matte vs Gloss: Which Lamination is Better for Packaging?

What Is Lamination in Packaging?
Lamination is a thin plastic film applied to the surface of printed packaging. It serves two purposes: it protects the print from scratches, moisture, and fading, and it changes the look and feel of the box. The two most common options are matte lamination and gloss lamination, and each creates a very different impression.
Matte Lamination: The Premium Choice
Matte lamination applies a smooth, non-reflective film to the packaging surface. The result is a soft, velvety texture that feels premium to the touch. Colours appear slightly muted and sophisticated rather than bright and punchy.
Matte works particularly well for:
- Luxury and premium brands (cosmetics, skincare, jewellery)
- Minimalist designs with large areas of solid colour
- Packaging that will be handled frequently, as matte hides fingerprints better than gloss
- Brands aiming for an understated, elegant aesthetic
One consideration: matte lamination can make very dark colours appear slightly lighter, and fine text on dark backgrounds may lose some sharpness.
Gloss Lamination: Vibrant and Eye-Catching
Gloss lamination applies a shiny, reflective film that makes colours appear more vivid and saturated. It creates a high-energy, polished look that catches the eye on retail shelves.
Gloss is ideal for:
- Food packaging and confectionery boxes
- Children's products and toys
- Designs with bright colours and detailed photography
- Retail shelf packaging where visibility is critical
The trade-off is that gloss lamination shows fingerprints and smudges more easily, and can create glare under strong lighting.
Combining Matte and Gloss: Spot UV
You do not have to choose one or the other. Spot UV is a popular technique that applies a glossy coating to specific areas of a matte-laminated box, typically logos, text, or product images. This creates a striking contrast between the soft matte background and the shiny raised elements.
Spot UV is one of the most effective ways to make custom packaging stand out without adding significant cost.
Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on your brand, product, and target market. As a general guide: if your brand is premium, minimal, or luxury-oriented, go with matte. If your product is vibrant, playful, or needs to stand out on a crowded shelf, go with gloss. And if you want the best of both, consider matte lamination with spot UV highlights.
At The Innovative Packaging, both matte and gloss lamination are available on all box styles with no minimum order beyond our standard 100-unit MOQ.
