Beauty covers a wider range of formats than almost any other category, and each one is a different packaging problem. Lip gloss and colour cosmetics are narrow and tall, with almost no panel width to work with. Serum and treatment boxes hold glass that needs suspending rather than simply containing. Fragrance is usually rigid board, because weight in the hand is most of the perceived quality. Hair care splits between heavy bottles that leak and extension boxes 300-600mm long. Soap, bath bombs and bath products need to breathe or need a moisture barrier depending on how they are made. Skincare sets and kits need an insert that seats bottles of different heights at their own depth.
Stock weight is the cheapest quality signal in beauty. For folding cartons, 18-24pt feels noticeably more substantial than 12-14pt at a marginal cost difference, and below 16pt a premium product tends to feel disposable regardless of how well it is printed. Past that point you are into rigid board, 1.5mm to 3mm, which behaves like a different material entirely.
The finishing vocabulary here is narrow and effective: soft-touch lamination on the body with foil or spot UV on the logo, so the matte ground makes the detail read as deliberate. Soft-touch scuffs more visibly than plain matte on large dark solids, which is worth knowing if your design is a deep colour. Full details are on our materials and printing reference.
Closure type drives the dieline more than product volume does. A dropper cap adds 15-25mm above the bottle neck. An airless pump adds height and often a separate over-cap. A doe-foot applicator sets the height of a gloss box regardless of the tube body. Measure the product assembled, with its cap on.
Small formats are the least forgiving. On a 20mm-wide gloss box, two millimetres of clearance is more than ten per cent of the width and the tube visibly tips inside. We cut to the exact component rather than rounding up to a convenient size, which is why we ask for the actual product or its precise dimensions rather than a nominal size.
Beauty packaging almost always involves a decorated component - a stamped cap, a metallised band, a coloured tube - specified by a different supplier at a different time. That is how brands end up with a warm gold cap against a cool gold box. If a metallic matters, send us a physical sample rather than a colour name: foil is a material with its own tone and it is matched by eye against the real thing. Where a component colour has to be matched, specify the box colour as a Pantone spot ink rather than building it from CMYK.
The same applies across a shade or variant range. CMYK builds drift slightly between print runs, which is invisible in isolation and obvious when your own SKUs sit side by side on a shelf.
Where the product sells changes what the box needs. A shelf product is judged at arm's length, so the front panel has to be legible at distance and the finish has to survive being picked up and put back all day - matte outperforms gloss here for fingerprints alone. A peg-hung product needs a reinforced hanger tab or euro-slot, and the design has to work with the top 30mm given over to hanging.
A product sold online is never seen at arm's length. The detail work - a printed interior, a tight fit, foil on the logo - is what the customer actually experiences, and it needs a corrugated mailer around it, because a printed folding carton will not survive a courier network on its own.
A run starts at 100 units per style, with no tooling charge of any kind, which is what makes a twelve-shade range or a small seasonal edition viable rather than a volume commitment. Volume pricing applies from 500 units per design. Production is 10-15 business days from proof approval, 8-10 on a rush, and shipping is free across the USA. Every order includes a free dieline and a 3D proof, and reordering the same box later carries no tooling cost.
