Custom hair product packaging boxes with elegant finish

Custom Hair Product Boxes

Hair product packaging covers two completely different problems under one heading. Bottled hair care - shampoo, conditioner, oils, serums - is a wet-product problem: heavy, prone to leaking, sold in a crowded aisle. Extensions, bundles and wigs are a length problem: 300-600mm of hair that has to lie flat without folding. We build both, and they share almost nothing structurally.

Boxes for Bottled Hair Care

Bottles of shampoo, conditioner and treatment oil are heavy for their footprint and their contents are the risk. A leaking pump or a loosened cap will soften the base panel of a folding carton, and once board is wet it does not recover.

Three things reduce that risk. An auto-bottom base carries the load across the whole panel rather than on a flap, which matters once a bottle passes about 250g. A coated interior resists a small spill long enough for it to be noticed. And a box cut close to the bottle stops the bottle rocking, which is what loosens caps in transit in the first place.

Treatment oils are usually glass and much smaller, and they behave like serum bottles - a dropper cap sets the height, and an insert is worth it above about 30ml of glass.

Boxes for Extensions, Bundles and Wigs

Hair extensions need a long, shallow box - typically 300-600mm - so the hair lies flat rather than folded. A fold puts a permanent kink in the hair, and a customer will see it the moment the pack is opened.

A deep tuck-end box at that length is awkward to open cleanly and tends to bow in the middle. The structures that work are a two-piece box with a lift-off lid, or a tray-and-sleeve where the tray slides out and presents the hair flat. Both open along the length rather than at one end, which is how a customer wants to see a bundle.

Wigs on a cap or a form need depth as well as length, and generally a two-piece rigid box with an insert to hold the cap shape. A wig packed flat in a shallow box arrives creased.

Windows and Shade Matching

Shade is the main cause of returns in hair, and a window lets a buyer check colour and texture before purchase. That makes windows more valuable here than in most categories.

The structural caution is length. A 500mm box with a large cut-out down its face loses rigidity across the whole span and will flex in the middle. Keep the window to the top panel, away from the folds and the ends, and size it to show a representative section of the hair rather than the full length. On a two-piece box, a window in the lid is stronger than one cut into a long single panel.

Retail Fixtures and Hanging

Extensions and hair accessories are frequently sold on peg rails. A five-panel hanger or a die-cut euro-slot lets the box hang, but the tab has to be reinforced - a long box full of hair is heavy, and an unreinforced tab tears through on the first customer who lifts it awkwardly.

Tell us the fixture type before the dieline is drawn. Peg spacing, rail depth and whether the box hangs face-on or edge-on all change the panel layout, and a hanger added afterwards rarely sits where the artwork expects it.

Sizes We Build For

  • 250ml bottle: around 65 x 65 x 190mm.
  • Travel or trial bottle: around 45 x 45 x 130mm.
  • Single bundle, 18 inch: around 480 x 120 x 40mm.
  • Three-bundle set: around 560 x 200 x 70mm as a two-piece.
  • Wig box with cap form: around 300 x 250 x 180mm.

Internal dimensions, and built to your product rather than to a stock size.

Ranges, Variants and Set Packaging

Hair care sells as systems - a shampoo and conditioner pair, a curl routine, a repair set - and the packaging has to make the relationship obvious. Keep the layout fixed and let a colour field and the product name carry the difference. The range then reads as a family, and adding a variant is an artwork edit rather than a redesign. Specify those colours as Pantone spot inks if they distinguish the products, since CMYK builds drift enough between runs to be visible when the bottles sit side by side.

For a set box holding two bottles, the insert has to seat each bottle at its own height - shampoo and conditioner bottles are rarely identical, and a flat partition leaves the shorter one loose under the lid. Extension bundles sold as sets have the same requirement in the opposite direction: three bundles of different lengths want a tray sized to the longest, with the shorter ones held in place rather than sliding.

Positioning, Stock and Finish

The two halves of this category pull in opposite directions on finish. Bottled hair care sits in a competitive aisle where legibility at distance wins, and a matte laminated coated board handles that while resisting the handling a shelf product gets. Extensions and wigs are a premium, considered purchase, often bought online after research - so the box is opened at home and photographed, which rewards rigid board, a printed interior, and foil on the logo.

Kraft appears in the natural and textured-hair segments, with the usual caveat that brown stock mutes printed colour. The full stock and finish comparison is on our materials and printing page.

Requesting a Quote

Which half of the category you are in changes what we need. For bottles: dimensions with the closure fitted, and the filled weight. For extensions: the bundle length and thickness. Either way, tell us if it hangs on a peg rail, because the tab has to be designed in rather than added. Related: lip gloss boxes and the wider cosmetic boxes range.
