A retail box is designed to be seen on a shelf, picked up, and carried home. That is a different job from shipping, and it shapes every structure in this range. Straight and reverse tuck ends are the standard folding cartons for light retail products. Auto-bottom boxes lock square under load and are the right choice once contents get heavy. Seal-end cartons are glued at both ends and have to be torn open, which makes them the most tamper-evident option. Two-piece boxes and tray-and-sleeve builds slow the opening down for a more considered reveal. Hanger cartons carry a reinforced tab or euro-slot for peg display. Paper bags and show boxes carry the purchase out of the store.
Retail stock is chosen for how it holds up to handling as much as how it prints. A shelf product is picked up and replaced many times before it sells, so gloss lamination - which looks vivid in a photograph - shows fingerprints on dark panels within a day. Matte is the safer default, with spot UV or foil for contrast where the design needs a focal point.
Caliper is a perception decision as much as a structural one. A 12pt box and a 24pt box print identically; what changes is whether the box gives under finger pressure, which undermines whatever is printed on it. The full stock, coating and finish comparison is on our materials and printing page.
Retail sizing has a constraint that direct-to-consumer packaging does not: the fixture. Shelf modules, peg spacing and case dimensions are fixed, and a box 10mm wider than the category norm can lose a placement outright. If you know the retailer or the fixture, tell us before the dieline is drawn.
Give us length x width x depth measured at the product's widest point, assembled and with any cap or applicator fitted. Our dielines are drawn to internal dimensions, so board thickness is already accounted for - allow 1-2mm clearance per axis for a rigid product, more for anything soft-sided or if an insert is going in.
This is the step first-time retail packaging most often misses, and the one that causes reprints. A barcode needs a quiet zone around it, adequate contrast, and a flat area to sit on. Printed across a fold or over a busy image, it will not scan reliably. Reserve a clear rectangle on the base or back panel before the artwork is laid out.
If you are selling into a retailer, ask for their packaging specification early. Many have rules on barcode placement, case markings, shelf-module dimensions, and sometimes shelf-ready packaging that opens into a display tray. None of it is negotiable at delivery and all of it is cheap to design in at dieline stage.
Most brands now do both, and the two channels want opposite things. A shelf box optimises for legibility at a metre and durability under handling. A direct-to-consumer box is never seen at distance and optimises for the opening experience - a printed interior, a snug fit, a considered reveal.
The setup that serves both is a printed retail carton inside a corrugated mailer box for online orders. The retail box stays the same in both channels, and the mailer does the shipping work a folding carton cannot.
It also keeps your shelf pricing and your shipping costs from fighting each other: the retail carton can be sized tightly for facings, and the mailer sized for the order rather than for a single unit.
Orders begin at 100 units per style. Nothing is charged for tooling, so originating a full range of sizes costs unit price rather than a charge per dieline. Volume pricing begins from 500 units per style. Production is 10-15 business days after proof approval, 8-10 on a rush, with free delivery anywhere in the USA.
To quote, send the product dimensions, the retailer or fixture if you have one, and confirm whether the box needs a barcode panel. Reserving that panel at dieline stage takes a minute; adding it after artwork approval means a reprint, which is the most avoidable cost in retail packaging. Send the product dimensions, the quantity, and the retailer if you have one.
