Serum Boxes

Serum packaging protects the most expensive millilitres in a skincare line. The bottle is usually glass, often with a dropper or airless pump, and the actives inside frequently degrade in light. A folding carton alone does not solve any of that - the structure inside the box is what stops a heavy glass bottle from striking the walls, and the stock is what keeps light off the formulation.

Suspending the Bottle Instead of Resting It

The instinct is to cut the box tight to the bottle. That works for movement but not for impact: a bottle resting directly against the box wall transmits every knock straight into the glass. A paperboard insert or a four-corner tray suspends the bottle away from the walls, so the board absorbs the impact rather than the bottle.

How much that matters depends on the bottle. A 30ml glass dropper bottle is heavy enough to break through a single-wall carton if the carton is dropped on a corner. An airless pump in acrylic is far more forgiving. For high-value serums, or anything shipping direct to customers, a rigid box with a cut insert is the structure that reliably survives - see our materials and printing reference for how rigid board compares with folding carton stock.

Droppers, Pumps and Box Height

Closure type drives the dieline more than bottle volume does. A dropper cap adds 15-25mm above the bottle neck and the pipette hangs below it inside the bottle, so the box is taller than the bottle suggests. An airless pump adds height too, and often a separate over-cap that has to be accounted for.

Brands sometimes ask for a shaped recess so the dropper sits into the top panel and the box stays shorter. We generally advise against it: cutting a recess into the top panel weakens exactly the panel that takes the load when boxes are stacked. Building the height into the dieline costs a few millimetres of shelf space and keeps the structure sound.

Light-Sensitive Actives

Vitamin C, retinol and many peptide actives oxidise under light, which is why serum bottles are so often amber, cobalt or opaque. The carton is the second line of defence, and it is a complete one while the box is closed - solid board blocks light entirely.

This is the reason we steer serum brands away from die-cut windows. A window on a serum box exposes the formulation to light on shelf for the whole time it sits there, and it is not selling the purchase - customers buy a serum on its claims and its brand, not on the appearance of the liquid. Where a brand wants the bottle visible, a rigid box with a lift-off lid gives the reveal at the point of opening instead, without the shelf exposure.

Stock Weight and Perceived Value

Serum is a premium purchase, and stock weight is the cheapest way to signal that. For folding cartons, 18-24pt feels noticeably more substantial in the hand than 12-14pt at a marginal cost difference. Below 16pt a serum box tends to feel disposable regardless of how well it is printed.

Above that sits rigid board of 1.5-3mm, which does not flex when lifted at all. It costs more per unit and ships assembled rather than flat, so factor in storage. It is the standard for clinical and luxury skincare, and for gift sets where the box is part of the product.

Serum Box Sizes We Build Regularly

  • 15ml dropper bottle: around 35 x 35 x 95mm.
  • 30ml dropper bottle: around 40 x 40 x 115mm - the most common serum build.
  • 50ml airless pump: around 50 x 50 x 140mm.
  • Two-bottle routine set: around 90 x 45 x 120mm with a partition.

Internal dimensions in every case, with the closure included in the height.

Selling a Routine as a Set

Serums increasingly sell as steps in a routine rather than as single products, and set packaging is a different structural problem. Two or three bottles of different heights in one box will not sit level, so the insert has to seat each one at its own depth - a flat partition leaves the shorter bottle rattling below the lid.

The other decision is whether the individual cartons go inside the set box. Keeping them means the customer can store each product properly and you only produce one carton design per product. Dropping them makes the set cheaper and slimmer, but the bottles then need a cut insert rather than a simple partition, because nothing else is protecting the glass. For gift sets, a two-piece rigid box with a cut tray is the format that survives shipping and still opens as a reveal.

Tamper Evidence and Batch Coding

Skincare buyers check that a carton is sealed, and retailers increasingly require it. A glued seal-end box has to be torn to open, which is the most tamper-evident folding carton available. Sealing stickers on a tuck end are lighter and let the box be opened without damage, which some brands prefer for the unboxing.

Batch and expiry coding is usually applied at fill rather than printed in the run, so leave a clear unprinted zone for it on the base or back panel. Designing that zone in deliberately avoids a code being stamped over artwork.

Getting a Quote

Send the bottle with its closure fitted, or the dimensions measured that way, plus the fill volume. Tell us whether it ships direct to customers - that decides whether an insert is optional or necessary. See also perfume boxes for rigid builds and the wider cosmetic boxes range.
