How Much Do Custom Boxes Cost in 2026? A Guide for Small Brands

Custom packaging cost depends on five things: the box style, the size, the material, the print and finish, and how many boxes you order. Simple tuck-end boxes cost the least per box. Two-piece boxes with extra finishes cost the most. At The Innovative Packaging you can order from 100 units, and we send your quote within 24 hours.
We don't list fixed prices on this page, because two boxes that look alike can quote very differently once the size or the board changes. What we can do is show you what moves the price, so you know what to expect before you ask.
What decides the price of a custom box?
Every quote comes down to the same five things.
- Box style. A tuck-end box is made from one flat piece. A two-piece box has a separate lid and base. More parts and more hand work mean a higher price.
- Size. A bigger box uses more board. Even a few extra millimeters can change the sheet size the factory has to use.
- Material. Thicker board feels better and protects more, but it costs more than standard paperboard.
- Print and finish. One or two colors cost less than full color. Foil, embossing and spot UV each add cost.
- Quantity. This has the biggest effect on the price per box, and we cover it below.
How do different box styles compare on cost?
This is a rough guide to how the styles compare. The final price still depends on size, material and quantity.
| Box style | Usual cost level | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Straight tuck-end boxes | Lower | Cosmetics, supplements and small retail items |
| Custom mailer boxes | Lower to mid | Online orders and subscription boxes |
| Tuck-end boxes with a window | Mid | Products customers want to see before they buy |
| Two-piece boxes | Higher | Gift sets and premium products |

How does order quantity change the price per box?
The price per box usually drops as the quantity goes up. A factory uses its time and materials better on a bigger run, so a run of 1,000 boxes costs less per box than a run of 100.
With us you can start at 100 units. That helps if you are launching a new product and don't want boxes piling up in a spare room. Volume pricing starts at 500 units. If you already know you will reorder, ask for a quote at two quantities and compare the price per box.
One thing to watch: the cheapest price per box is not always the cheapest choice. If half the order sits in storage for a year, you paid for space you didn't need.
How much do material and print add?
Thicker board adds weight and a better feel in the hand. That is worth paying for if your product is heavy or sells at a high price. For a light product at a lower price, standard board is often enough.
Print works the same way. A simple logo in one or two colors keeps the price down. Full color across every panel costs more, and so does printing the inside of the box. Decide which panels customers will actually look at, and put your budget there.
Do foil, embossing and spot UV cost extra?
Yes. Each finish is an extra step in production, so each one adds to the price.
- Foil adds a metallic shine to a logo or pattern.
- Embossing raises part of the design so you can feel it.
- Spot UV puts a glossy coat on selected areas.
- Lamination covers the whole box in a matte, gloss or soft-touch layer. Our guide on matte vs gloss lamination explains the difference.
In our experience, one finish done well beats four finishes fighting each other. A matte box with a single foil logo often looks more expensive than a box with every option switched on, and it costs less.
What does a CBD, cosmetic or food box cost?
The industry changes what goes into the quote.
For CBD boxes, the main things are child-resistant packaging and enough space for lab information and warnings. We supply child-resistant packaging for CBD products, so mention it when you ask for a quote.
For cosmetic boxes, finishes drive most of the price. Soft-touch lamination and foil are popular here, and they are also where the budget goes.
For food boxes, the material has to suit what goes inside and how it is stored. Tell us whether the food touches the box directly, and we will suggest the right build.
What costs come on top of the box?
Here is what to check with any supplier, and what it looks like with us.
- Shipping. Shipping anywhere in the USA is free with us, so you don't need to add it to your budget. Freight on bulky boxes adds up quickly elsewhere, so always ask.
- Design. We make the dieline for every custom order at no extra cost, and our team helps with your artwork. If you want to understand it first, read what a dieline is.
- Proof. You get a digital proof within 24 to 48 hours of placing your order, before anything is printed.
- Deadline. Standard production takes 10-15 business days. Rush production takes 8-10 business days, so tell us your date when you ask for a quote.
How can you lower the cost without hurting quality?
- Pick the simplest box style that still protects your product.
- Ask if a slightly different size would use less board.
- Choose one standout finish instead of several.
- Keep the print simple on panels customers rarely see.
- Order the quantity you will use in the next few months, and ask for a second quote at a higher number.
- Send artwork that is ready to print, so there are fewer rounds of changes.
Is custom packaging worth the cost?
For most brands it is, up to a point. A plain mailer is fine for a $15 product. A $90 serum needs a box that looks like it is worth $90. The box is the first thing a customer touches, so spend where they will notice it and save where they won't.
How do you get an exact quote?
Send us these details and we will do the rest.
- What goes in the box, or the box style you want.
- The size of the product, or the box size if you know it.
- Your quantity, plus a second quantity to compare.
- Any material or finish you prefer.
- Your deadline, and your artwork if it is ready.
We reply within 24 hours. Request a free quote and we will show you the price per box at each quantity.
