The base flaps overlap completely rather than meeting edge to edge, so there is a double thickness of board across the whole base instead of a seam. It is the strongest folding-carton base we make.
When the contents are heavy, dense, or unevenly weighted - a filled glass jar, a bottle, a tool. It is also worth it where the box is stacked in storage, since the overlapping base resists deformation from the weight of boxes above it.
A little, because it uses more board per unit than a standard auto bottom. There are no additional die or setup charges, so the difference is material only - usually a smaller number than the cost of replacing damaged stock.
