Rigidity where the drawer needs it most. On a plain tray the side walls flex as the drawer is pulled, which makes the sleeve drag and eventually deforms the tray. Glued walls hold their shape, so the drawer slides the same way on the hundredth open as the first.
Snug enough that the tray does not slide out on its own, loose enough to pull with one hand. That tolerance is set at dieline stage and is the single detail that decides whether the box feels well made - it cannot be adjusted after production.
