You get a base that carries weight and a top the customer can open and close again. It is the most practical combination for retail products that are used over time rather than consumed at once - the base does the structural work, the top stays convenient.
Marginally. The base still snaps square in one motion; only the top has to be tucked. Compared with a fully hand-folded carton it is a large saving, and compared with a glued seal end it costs a couple of seconds per unit.
Anything the auto-bottom base can carry, which on 18-24pt stock covers most retail products including glass jars and bottles. The limiting factor is the top: a heavy product in a tall box can push a tucked lid open if the box is dropped.
