The base panels are pre-glued at the factory so they interlock as the flat box is squared up - three folds in sequence, which is where the name comes from. The result is a base that locks under load rather than relying on a tucked flap holding by friction.
Far more than a tuck bottom of the same board, because load spreads across the whole base panel instead of one flap. The practical limit is the board rather than the structure: on 18-24pt it comfortably carries jars and bottles, and past that we would move to corrugated.
Yes, and that is often the real reason to choose it. The base snaps into shape in one motion where a tuck bottom has to be folded and tucked by hand. At 100 units that is nothing; at 10,000 it is the difference that pays for the higher unit cost.
