Because the base is one continuous piece with no seam. A cake can be slid in and out without catching, weight sits evenly, and a separate lid lifts straight off without tilting the cake - which is the main cause of damage between the counter and the table.
From the cake board rather than the sponge, since most decorated cakes sit on a drum 25-50mm wider than the cake. Then measure to the highest point of the finished cake including any topper, and we add 15-20mm of clearance above it.
With the right specification. Board absorbs moisture from cold humid air and loses stiffness, so for chilled cakes we specify a heavier caliper than the size alone suggests, and a coated interior so condensation does not soak straight into the base.
