It gives the tuck a reinforced slot to seat into and puts a folded edge on the visible rim instead of a raw board edge. The closure stays tight through repeated opening, where a single-wall slot gradually widens.
It closes some of the gap. You get a finished edge and noticeably more rigidity than a plain carton, at a fraction of rigid board cost and with the advantage that it still ships flat. It will not match rigid for weight in the hand.
Retail products that are opened and closed repeatedly - supplements, coffee, multipacks, anything used over weeks rather than consumed at once - and premium products where the rim of the box is visible when it sits open.
