It arrives as a closed case. Staff remove the lid and the base becomes a display tray with the product already positioned in it. Nothing is assembled and nothing is unpacked, which is why these get used where standalone displays often do not.
Worth doing, since the lid is what the retailer sees in the stockroom and it identifies the case at a glance. Some brands also print the inside of the lid so it can be stood behind the tray as a header once removed.
Enough to look full after a few sell, and divisible by your case count so restocking is straightforward. Twelve to twenty-four is the usual range. A tray that has to be part-filled from a second case is the kind of friction that gets a display retired.
