A die-cut insert with a cavity per item, punched from a single sheet rather than assembled from strips. Each cavity is shaped to the product, so items sit in fixed positions and cannot slide into each other.
Common counts are 4, 6, 9, 12, 16 and 24, and the count drives the box footprint more than the item size does. Odd counts and irregular grids are possible - the constraint is that the cavity walls need enough material between them to stay rigid.
They should be specified together, because the partition is dimensioned from the box interior rather than from the product. Ordering a box first and a partition later usually means one of the two has to be re-cut.
