A tab-and-slot lock at the base corners that holds the tray square without glue. It sets up by hand in a few seconds and, unlike a glued base, means the tray ships completely flat and can be assembled as you need it.
It stores and ships flatter and costs less per unit, but every tray is a manual operation. If you assemble a handful at a time it wins; if you pack thousands, the labour usually outweighs the saving and a glued base is cheaper overall.
On appropriate board, yes - the lock puts load through the tab rather than a fold. It is less forgiving of loose sizing than a glued base, though: a tray cut with too much clearance can be assembled slightly out of true and then carries weight unevenly.
